The first introduction week ended and the students enjoyed a deserved break over the weekend. Many issues and questions were discussed regarding the topic of the countryside, urbanization, and inner migration of population. Strelka sat down and talked with one of this week lecturers, sociologist from the Higher School of Economics, Nikita Pokrovsky on the subject of the countryside.

Hinterland: student’s presentations

During the week devoted to the theme of Hinterland, students split into groups of 2-3 people and presented their findings and comprehension of the global and local trends related to the countryside. Three assignments were distributed among the 43 students touching upon topics of generations, headlines and routes. Out of the many highly interesting presentations, here are three that demonstrate some of the students’ findings.

The fact that Rem Koolhaas couldn’t be physically present at yesterday’s lecture didn’t stop him from giving it. Technology has gone a long way in aiding people with communication. So by the use of modern means, Rem talked extensively about the change in the esthetic core of the village. The countryside is becoming more and more automated whilst the role of the farmer is declining. The way the rural areas are being advertised is also affecting our perception of it. City dwellers begin to feel equally at home in the countryside, as well as in the city.

Yesterday the students went on a field trip to several settlements in the wealthiest Moscow region seeking to understand how the rural areas were shaped and what kind of changes occurred.
