Project: Chasing Illusions Made in the USSR (2011)

research theme: THINNING
Directors: Joseph Grima, Jiang Jun

Interior designer Minkoo Kang is from Seoul. He studied in the Thinning research theme with Joseph Grima and Jiang Jun. Minkoo’s research was based on the tourism industry in Russia and the case of Sochi. He looked at the historical context of how tourism was viewed during the Soviet period and how this compares with other philosophies of tourism. His project looked at Sochi’s plans to host the Winter Olympics and become a major tourist resort for decades to come, with construction booming in the area. Minkoo asked how the city could ensure that such growth is sustainable and realistic, rather than simply an illusion. Minkoo currently works at OMA.
