Project: Political (de)Branding (Christ the Saviour Cathedral & VDNKh) (2011)

research theme: Design
Directors: Stefano Boeri

Architect Shi Yang is from Qingdao in China. He studied in the Design research theme with Stefano Boeri. His work focused on the relationship between government and architecture, and he particularly looked at two examples in Moscow – Christ the Saviour Cathedral and the VDNKh exhibition complex. The cathedral was destroyed by the Soviets and a huge outdoor swimming pool was built in its place. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the cathedral was rebuilt. The research looked at architecture as an instrument of politics, and on how governments imbue architecture with political meaning. Shi currently works at OMA.
