Watchmen: The Urban Community

04.04.2012, 16:08

On April 10, the White Chambers Сultural Сentre will host a conference entitled Watchmen: The Urban Community. The conference will open the second series of activities devoted to the issue of preservation of Moscow’s cultural heritage and its integration into the modern life of the city. The series is organized by the Moscow Department of Cultural Heritage (Mosgornaslediye) and Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design.

Can architectural monuments be adjusted to fit into public spaces, preserving the cultural image of the city? How will the rules be set for such an adaptation, and who will set them? What role should the citizens play in the preservation process?

The conference Watchmen: The Urban Community will serve as a platform for the discussion of these questions by experts in the fields of architecture and urban studies, government authorities, and citizens.

The first part of the conference will feature experts’ lectures on international experience of cultural heritage preservation.

The Israeli architect and historian Ammon Bar Or will speak about heritage preservation in the context of cities: what approaches should be used when reconstructing historical quarters and how the atmosphere of the place can be preserved?

The architect and founder of the Grosfeld van der Velde Architecten company Bart van der Velde will offer his experience of creating a library in a former palace in Utrecht as an answer to the question of how new architectural projects can be developed in protected zones and what ethical standards should be followed.

Finally, Jana Leo, the founder and head of the MOSIS foundation, will speak about the nature of intangible heritage: how it can be identified and what the role of the public in this process is.

In the second part of the conference, the panelists will discuss the issues of heritage preservation in Moscow. Experts and city residents will attempt to determine who sets the spirit and traditions in Moscow and preserves the architectural face of the city.

The conference will be held on April 10, from 19.00 until 21.00, in the White Chambers Cultural Centre in 1 Prechistenka Str.

The first series of public discussions, entitled Watchmen: The Future of Cultural Heritage, organized by Strelka Institute and Mosgornaslediye, was held in November and December of 2011.
