Brian Greene: The Mystery of Dark Energy and the Future of the Universe

english with russian translation

Observations strongly suggest that all of space is filled with a mysterious substance that scientists call “dark energy.” While the full identity of the dark energy remains unknown, observations conclude that it comprises more than 70% of the mass of the universe, and is responsible for a form an anti-gravity that is driving the universe to expand ever more quickly. In this talk, which presumed no background in physics or astronomy, Brian Greene described the discovery of dark energy, how it has changed our understanding of cosmology, and what it might mean for the far future of the cosmos.

Columbia University Professor and theoretical physicist Dr Brian Greene is one of the world’s foremost experts on string theory. A graduate of Harvard and Oxford universities, Dr Greene taught for many years at Cornell University before moving to Columbia. Alongside research and teaching, Dr Greene is an organizer the annual World Science Festival and the author of some of the most successful popular science books today, including the Amazon number one best seller The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory. Dr Greene’s was one of a select few physicists to play themselves in U.S. sitcom The Big Bang Theory.
