Hypnosis machine workshop is part of the academic programme of the project MANYSTUFF International Graphic Design Session, facilitated by Strelka Institute together with AGNCY under the aegis of the authority on graphic design, the blog manystuff.org and its author Charlotte Cheetham.

Together with students officeabc designers would like to bounce back on the idea of «sensorium». Sensorium is, by its greek ethymology aistheterion, the place of all sensations. Aristotles described it as a region in the brain centralizing the datas provided by all human senses.

In a way a movie could be a sensorium. A physical and virtual organ of sensations. You see and hear but also smell. Touch and taste, if you extend the movie experience to eating popcorns, associates the three major senses to more tangible experiences.

Cinema is also, as described by Jean Epstein, an «hypnosis-machine», something in between dream, sleep and attention.

It comes from the latin genere which means to create. Words appearing at the end. This is where it will start from. The End.

Students will have to invent a visual grammar of sensations. During the workshop students will produce A0 posters (841x1189mm) and research material, which will translate their impressions of the «city of Moscow». Posters can be made using various technics (xerox, china ink, collage, computer, film, etc.).

What will this poster say? How will it say it?

Together with curators participants will go for some field-trips in town. The goal is to convey the spirit of a city and engage with it.

Timetable

Day One (16.06)
Presentation. participants should bring a movie they like and talk about it (why they like it, what they felt, etc.).

Day Two (17.06)
Research starts. participants should bring a scrapbook. We will work with paper, scissors, xerox, rizo, computer, etc.

Day Three (18.06)
Research continues. field-trip in Moscow and its cinematographic feel.

Day Four (19.06)
The montage of the poster will be on its way. Rules can be playful.

Day Five (20.06)
All senses alert. The poster is about to be ready.

Day Six (21.06)
Presentation of the research and posters.
