Megacity: Cities beyond the scale we’ve known so far call for a different kind of urbanism

Yesterday the students met with the director of the theme Megacity Renier de Graaf and supervisors Laura Baird and Vadim Novikov. Renier then proceeded to talk about the phenomena of urban explosions, which is nowadays mostly seen in the most underdeveloped countries. He called them «a ticking time bomb», as they are unable to deal with the urbanization and growth.

The first introduction week ended and the students enjoyed a deserved break over the weekend. Many issues and questions were discussed regarding the topic of the countryside, urbanization, and inner migration of population. Strelka sat down and talked with one of this week lecturers, sociologist from the Higher School of Economics, Nikita Pokrovsky on the subject of the countryside.

Hinterland: student’s presentations

During the week devoted to the theme of Hinterland, students split into groups of 2-3 people and presented their findings and comprehension of the global and local trends related to the countryside. Three assignments were distributed among the 43 students touching upon topics of generations, headlines and routes. Out of the many highly interesting presentations, here are three that demonstrate some of the students’ findings.
