“WTF?!/What The Film?!” sought volunteers for a risky psychological experiment. Seven summer nights and seven films our guests knew very little about until the auditorium lights were dimmed. They had minimal information, no expectations, and no pre-formed opinions. Unexpected impressions are a rarity – but they are almost always the most truthful and the most important.

The program of “WTF?!/What The Film?!” was сurated by Russian film critic Roman Volobuyev, who has contributed to Izvestia, Vedomosti, Premiere, Empire, and Afisha. He is currently a deputy chief editor at Russian GQ.

FILM OF THE DAY:

An impressionable and musical, rather stupid teenage girl from the provinces falls in love with a young man whom her industrious, conservative father does not especially like.

A romantic folk tale about misunderstood love, full singing and barefoot dancing, and directed by the world famous son of a geologist, cosists almost entirely of close-up shots of various field crops. It was filmed by no less than three cameramen (one retired, another was burnt along with all his cameras while shooting the scene where the hero meets his beloved’s family). The film had such a resounding success in France that the producer went on to retire, and the director has not been seen ever since.
